Matisse's Inspiration from Travel and Treasured Objects

The Moorish Screen, 1921 (Philadelphia Museum of Art) and a late 19th-/early 20th-century cotton textile from North Africa. In curating our collection, we have many sources of inspiration. We wanted to highlight the Matisse exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (April 9 - July 9), as Matisse sought inspiration from objects often brought back from travels. He contemplated the relationship between his art and the decorative arts - thus evolved his still life paintings of treasured objects. We have taken a page from Matisse's book in the form of our Still Life Painting - Jug and Apple. Manoir's Apple and Jug still life This collection of works rarely seen outside of France brings together objects from around the world—including textiles, furniture, sculptures, and African masks—that inspired the artist's studio practice, from an Andalusian glass vase that he brought back from a trip to Spain to a Congolese figurine found in a Paris curio...

Gustavian Glory, French Style with Swedish Restraint

One of Manoir’s influences is the Swedish Gustavian style, a restrained interpretation of French neoclassicism. The sofa has the same rosette detailing and fluted legs, but has a modern look with it's burnt oak frame and the crisp linen upholstery in a neutral color with burlap side detail.   Our Louis XVI Side...

Travel-Inspired Design

I always wanted to be a travel writer - but during my time as an expat London my passion for travel began to intersect with my love for interior design. The influences that shape Manoir are many and varied. Visits to manor houses and chateaus throughout Europe have played a part, as have museums (the V&A, my weekly haunt!)), antique markets, the Kings Road in London, global travel, beautiful hotels and even the dwellings of chic friends. These posts will tell the story of how the Manoir collection has come together, a tapestry woven from the threads of these local and global influences. I hope you will enjoy our story and collection as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.  This is the beginning of a journey, and shouldn't all journeys begin on a road as beautiful as this one leading up to a farmhouse in Umbria? (Beautiful spot...
